KIBORG Mutators Guide: How They Work and What Changed
KIBORG mutators explained from Steam patch notes: where to find them, what declining an offer does, the June 2026 rebalance and Commando as a counter.

Are mutators and mutations the same thing in KIBORG?

How do you counter a mutator that disables ranged weapons?
Did mutators change recently?
Mutators are run-wide modifiers you pick up during a Tower run: each gives you something and costs you something. Official posts also call them “mutations”, so treat the two words as one system. They are separate from augmentations, which attach extra rules to implants, and from hub upgrades bought with data. Gazettely’s launch review describes the trade-off simply: passive perks such as higher max health or faster energy gain, paired with penalties such as disabled ranged weapons or reduced resistance.

Where do you get mutators during a run?
A forum reply from GoDDuSS (26 June 2025) says you can find the Long-Term Investment mutator in the mutator safe, the mutator shop, or in the starting room if you have a perk that lets you take a mutator at the beginning of a run. That reply is not a full drop table, and we found no official page listing drop rates or floors.
A 30 May 2025 patch fixed an issue that stopped the Long-Term Investment mutation from appearing at the start of a run, which fits the starting-room route above.
What does declining a mutator do?
The one official rule on refusals is the 17 June 2025 hotfix:
Fixed a bug where declining a mutation increased negative effects. It now increases only positive effects.
So declining an offer now builds up positive effects only. If a penalty breaks your plan, such as a ranged ban while your build leans on guns, saying no is a supported choice.
What did the 15 June 2026 rebalance change?
The 100K-copies milestone patch rebalanced mutators. Numbers below are copied from the patch notes and may have been tuned again since.
| Mutator | Change in the 15 June 2026 notes |
|---|---|
| Digital Mirage, Reaper, Deadeye, Aegis Shield System, Steelblood (minor) | Penalties softened |
| Brawler | Doubled health |
| Patience | Enemy damage increases every 30 seconds |
| Savings on Insurance | Data gain doubled |
| Bloodhunt | Health restored per kill raised to 15; boss hits no longer cost health; an ally dying restores 5 health |
| Defective Implants | Player takes 20 damage, enemies take 100 |
| Energy Surge | Damage reduced to 35% (from 50%) |
| Unstable Energy | Chance reduced from 10% to 1% |
| Glass-forged | Damage increased to x50 (from x25) |
| Feedback Loop | Grants 25 armor per status effect |
Liquid Fire, Ally Pact, Ricochet Rounds, Compressed Shot, Blood Bullets, Explosive Defence and Tesla Adept also changed, and Defensive Overcharge, Last Light and Glass Cannon got “overall rebalance” entries without numbers. A 23 June 2026 patch fixed the Bloodhunt health restore separately.

Which mutators pair badly with your build?
KIBORG team member Geisteskrankenchan’s guidance is general: mutators may work nicely combined with specific implants or augmentations. His one concrete example is the mutator that disables ranged weapons, where the Commando set from the 5 November 2025 update “has some tricks to counter that”.
A 2025 fix is a useful clue about how the ranged ban works: a 1 May 2025 patch fixed Sovereign features being incorrectly disabled by the Brawler mutation, which that patch note describes as disabling ranged weapons. Geisteskrankenchan also says Sovereign abilities should count as ranged attacks, so check how your set interacts before taking a ranged ban.
A player in the same November thread described a mutator that grants regeneration but raises enemy damage over time and asked whether the buildup resets per encounter. The reply did not answer that, so we do not know. The Patience entry in the 2026 notes (enemy damage up every 30 seconds) is the nearest documented match, but it is unconfirmed that this is the mutator they meant.
